spod mix
Jul 11th, 2006 at 3:53pm

i did an over nighter the other night for the tench and carp, i am sure that the carpers were sniggering at me when they saw me fishing in the rain with my feeder rod, float rod and the help of a few star lights, as they happly sat in the bivvies waiting for their alarms to go off only coming out once in a while to play with their bait boats.

but it wasn't all bad as only 3 carp wear caught that night on the lake, and i got one of them

i didn't really have much interest in carp, i was just after the tench, but i am now determined to prove that a pike angler can beat them at their own game with out needing to use things like bait boats and fish finders.

i have been told by the owner that a method mix will put the carp off, and you will just get tortured by tench, so i think the spod will be my key to success.

what are the best things to put in your mix to attract the carp and keep them in you swim?

how much mix should you put out at the start of your session.

i think sweet corn will be my hook bait, as the carp arn't taking boilies on this lake yet.

How much to put out, well you caught a carp so you are obviously on the right lines
one thing at the moment thats working for me is being very different in my aproach eg
im the only angler at the moment putting out a lot of bait via the spod very acuratley
and catching in the hot weather when the others are strugling. Its purley down to quantity
of bait. Hemp, dead magots, mini halibut pellets, are all good in the spod. Just experiment
and enjoy.

After thought if corn is on the hook have it in your spod mix and dont be
afraid to use the plastic corn in a hair rig or side hooked that way you know
the bait is always perfect. Have fun.

I just use corn help and small pellets around about hemp size around two pints of each, works a treat for Irish bream! Wink Smiley

The most succesful carper I know uses a mix of half and half wild bird seed and hemp. He starts off spodding for ages, putting a blanket of about 2 Gallon in the swim. He gives it an hour and then starts fishing. He gets more runs than the rest of the lake put togehter and once the runs dry up he will quite often cast out an empty spod as the splash attracts the fish as it's the sound of the dinner bell.

It makes me laugh as all the realtree brigade spend the money on the tackle and skimp on the bait, Chris's tackle is basic and he concentrates on the bait. His rigs are as simple as you can get with no fancy nonesense and he catches a shed load.

It's a lesson I learnt in piking years ago. It's all down to the quality of the bait your sticking out the rest is secondry.

50% Hemp 50% Red Band.

Red Band is a pigeon conditioner containing aniseed, there are numerous copies around and most are cheaper than the original.

Don't fish a popped up bait over it, try a critically balance bait sitting just off the bottom. The carp move along sucking this stuff up,  a pop up is abover their mouths and won't get taken whereas a balanced bait is just sucked in along with everything else.

Hope that helps.

the real trick to spod mixes is to make sure that there are loads of differing sizes of particles in the mix.

This is because the carp cant feed continuously in the same way and have to suck or hoover at different speeds. this makes it most likely to make a mistake with the hookbait.

personally my spod mix will contain some or all of these:

trout or halibut pellets
Bait tech super g groundbait
wheat
hemp
pigeon conditioner
maples
chopped boillies
sweetcorn
dead maggots
maize
CC moore cherrymino
Maple 8 liquid

Like anything in fishing Mark if it gives you confidence then it's a winner but personally I wouldn't bother with all that lot. The Red Band/Hemp mix with a few hookbait freebies in does me fine and I've caught a few carp in my time.

Hello just read this and seeing as ive played for carp over the years and the pyramid baiting thing has come up in a lot of places heres a link
http://www.barbel.co.uk/site/articles/baitingpyramid/baitingpyramid.htm
On the subject of a spod mix why not tayloy it to using a method feeder on one rod with the same mix vitalin is good for this as are countless things from cc moore and haiths. Ive yet to discover a carp that doesnt take a method feeder type of approach but you wil probably have to wade through tench bream etc but thats the point of the pyramid baiting theory.
http://www.haiths.com
http://www.ccmoore.com
haiths in particular do a mixed insect food that will be different from anything anyone else will be using, just mix it with anything your using at about a fifth at the most in a method mix or it can break up to easily. another good ingredient are the crushed shells at a very low level to give the fish a different texture( crunch) or eggshells.

Only thing I would add is that their are places a lot cheaper than Haiths, it pays to have look round.

true some things you will find cheaper than haiths but others are a lot more expensive try getting robin red anywhere cheaper, although all robin red is from haiths as are many other mixes that you find plus the quality is worth the expense for the more unusual items you can get.
