Hi guys im new to lure fishing. I'm about to buy a daiwa cygnus reel, i want to know what is the difference between jerkbait reels and baitcaster reels?
it says that its a sea fishing reel, does this mean it wouldnt be ideal for freshwater fishing?
i want to start off using a few lipless salmo lures. maybe the slider
i havent much of a clue what im doing so i would appreciate advice on this reel if its a good buy or not for pike fishing and what weight lures can i cast with it?
i posted a while ago as john k, but for some reason i havent been able to log in after.
reason im after the cygnus is because its more affordable.
thanks in advance.

Don't know much about the reel, what sort of waters are you planning to fish? If general rivers, drains, stillwaters etc and casting from the bank I would buy a slider (sinking), a copper spoon, a 6" Replicant, a spring dawg, a spinnerbait , and maybe a chubby shad, I think thats about all you need to get started.

John, I've used this reel for about 2 years now, it will cast lures of up to 2.5oz easily, I'm sure it will cast lures that are a little heavier, but I have always felt a little uneasy doing so. if you want to cast bigger lures you really need a more substantial reel coupled with the correctly weighted rod, the reel, would then imo need to be filled with 65lb bs braid. I'm just about to start throwing larger lures and I'm about to buy a abu 6501, and I can't wait. Hope this helps.

Good list, I'd add a Rapala Super Shad Rap to that too
