What Weight would you say is agood CHUB??
Nov 10th, 2009 at 8:51pm

Hello chaps. just wondered what size most would regard as a good/specimen size chub. i know certain river's do 7lb fish reguarly, im in norfolk and 7's are caught but not that often big 6's are fairly common. personally think a chub over 5lb 12oz is a good fish. on 1 river in norfolk a 5-12 would be huge for that particular river. so bound to have different views for certain river's etc. what do you regard as a big chub?? thanks lee...

I think that a 'good' chub is a 6lb'er + , however i think that any chub over 5 and a half, you can go home with a feeling of satisfaction and a good result for the day Wink

A six from the 'free' areas in Nfk I think are a special fish especially now the furry critters are around. Never done a six myself but close to it so if you have from round this way well done and a seven well what can I say.... Smiley

I think you lot are confusing 'good' with 'big'.

'Good' chub are between six and eight...

...inches. Wink

Five pound chub seem pretty common on the rivers I fish, sixes less so. I'd go along with a five and half being a satisfying chub.

Stone me! On my local rivers, the Sow and Penk, i count a 4and half as a "good" fish and a 5 is a big 'un (i've had 5 5s in the last 4 years to a pb of 5lb7oz).

I've spoken to a couple of guys who say they've had 6s and i reckon i've seen one that might've gone 7 (i thought it was a carp at first!)

I reckon a 6 is a pretty exceptional fish for my locallity...

It's interesting to see people's different views on what's a good chub, geoff saying 4lb+ and rik say 5+ are good fish for there local river's. some angler's may have some big fish in there local river (6-7lb etc) but other's regard 4-5lb fish big where as on on other river's they're very common size fish. thanks for your opinion's  to all who replied Smiley

Hi all

I agree with Ben's last post.  I regard any chub over 6lb from a river to be a big fish.

i know of a few pits that hold them, very big fish too, i suppose again anything over 5+ would be a good'un over 6 be big.

i'm piking a venue that has a few chub in it, i know they have been caught too 5 plus, had a few odd takes too on deads, wich im certain are chub, might have to try a small piece of lamprey... Wink

they say stillwater chub can be far more cagey than river chevins, not sure how true that is tho.

i dont buy the theory that stillwater chub are more predatory tho, all chub are predatory, omnivorous buggers, they will eat anything! Shocked Grin Cool

It's alway's good to have a river PB where ever you are.
I mainly fish the Teme where I've had them to just over 6, but not for a few years now and I've just started to fish another small local river where I know there's 5's but havent had one as yet.

Having fished for Chub on Norfolk rivers for over 20 years I would say a fish over 6lb is an achieveable target. However a seven although possible, would be a fish of a lifetime. Saying that, one Norfolk angler I know of has caught at least 4 different sevens.

I think most of the posts are wide of the mark here, It wasnt that long back that 5lb chub regularly featured in the angling mags. It has only been in recent years that 6s and 7s filled up with boilies and pellets have become more common. I think this is a true gauge of a big chub. On rivers that dont see lots of pressure and more importantly large amounts of high protein baits going in, a big chub is still 5lb.

This poses another question, which would you prefer, a true natural chub at 5lb or a boilie gut loggerhead at 7lb? I think I would prefer a natural 5 over a boilie 7.

Most of the Wensum Chub over 6lb and one of over 7lb I have caught came from stretch'es that hardly ever saw a pellet or boillie. The main cause of weight gain in Wensum Chub is that there is so little competition for available food. Also now that we have a sucessfull re-introduction of otters into our river system the numbers of Chub are falling, we can only hope that the Signal Crayfish also multipying in numbers can achieve some kind of balance. As I see things at the moment we are seeing the end of a fantastic era of Chub fishing on the Wensum. Sorry for all the doom and gloom but I have seen the best of the Wensum.

Are signals a natural food source? Ok i will accept these as they are crustacea but dont like the look of their passports. But surely that you have caught only 1 6 and 1 7, that they are in fact exceptional fish, not just good fish. A good chub is still a 5lber in my book and I am generally satisfied with any chub over 4 but consider a 5 a good fish and a 6 or above exceptional.

not really there an alien species Shocked Roll Eyes

but yes the chub DO eat them and they defo do get big on them, if you look at lea chub..you have the fishers green chub (those that are left) they have got big on both signals and pellets/boilies...

go down to the navigation part of the lea and 6's and 7's even 8's are caught, 6's and 7 's being a seasonal feature, the chub in the navigation definetly dont see a huge amount of pellet/boiles at all, there dining on the crays amongst other natural food sources, dotn forget chub are predators..or more to the point omnivorous..they eat everything! Wink

rumours about that the chub record has gone last week with a river fish of 10lb plus. I'll be interested to see the photos as it's not from the usual rivers that produce a good few 7+.

Zanderholic ive been lucky enough to catch a few over 5 1 6 and a 7 and all of them fish put on the weight eating crayfish not pellets or boilies and all of these fish i caught were with traditional methods liquidised bread in the feeder and danish blue on the hook Wink

Wink

Id like to see a record chub also, preferably from a small sidestream thats never been caught before..

No never got anywhere near that. I was led to believe that this fish was a genuine 8, although I have never seen any photos.  Undecided

The Wensum 8, was there ever any photos. I was led to believe it came within the Norwich City ring road stretch of the Wensum. Did'nt it top John Wilsons list of local big Chub. Roll Eyes

Smiley

that looks massive, and judging by the photo of the new UK record, about 20lb.... Cheesy
a good chub is anything over 6lb, it all really depends on the water, a big chub could be 4lb if you put things into context.

I agree with what Bob Roberts says on his site: www.bobrobertsonline.co.uk about Chub. The Angling press gives us the impression that the rivers are 'full' of 6lb+ Chub & we all should be catching them.....not quite Undecided I'm sure Leighton will agree (hey, that is a Stonker on page one  Wink)
To me a 3lb+ is a decent fish & 5lb+ is superb Smiley
